TOPIC OF THE DAY: Public
trust
Published in the Asbury Park Press 03/5/05Penalize
those who abuse jobs
I was a state employee for almost four decades, responsible for supervising a
unit, purchasing equipment, printing and office supplies, and hiring of
staff.
An employee entrusted with this responsibility has to maintain
credibility, honesty and integrity. Should you abuse your position, you should
risk the following: loss of your pension, fines, removal from your position,
reimbursement to the state or jail time.
I am shocked by the actions of
Commerce Commission chief of staff Lesley Devereaux outlined in the Feb. 28
editorial "Poster woman for ethics abuse." Her case may be small in the overall
picture, but it could be just the tip of the iceberg.
Devereaux gave all
the hard-working and honest state employees a black eye. Stiff penalties must be
enacted for the mismanagement and misuse of state money. No-show jobs and
nepotism must be banned. New Jersey taxpayers must be protected. And those who
stray must be punished to the full extent of the law.
