Dan, you said:
>If you only put poor kids in a school system what do you think
you're going to get?
This is the most important observation by far I have ever seen on
this board. Let me tell you why:
When I was in APHS (late 70's early 80's) our sending districts were
Belmar to Deal, excluding Loch Arbor but including Interlaken.
These sending districts put rich white kids in the school. The
school was about 1200 students, and about 250 or so were from the
wealthier sending districts. It desegregated the school.
Today we have the same sending districts, and you know how many
students from those places? Less than 20, despite the populations
of those towns growing the past quarter century.
Now here is the whammy: They aren't going to private schools (I'd
have no objection if that were so). Through serveral rulings in the
1990s, the Commissioner of Education has allowed these richer white
students to attend other public high schools, despite thier legal
recieving district being Asbury Park. The stated rationale in one
of them was that Red Bank Regional H.S. has a better music program
than AP, so our sending district kids can get bused up there.
Suddenly every white kid from Belmar to Deal became a music major.
In Allenhurst alone I believe there are over 60 high schoolers, and
I think 2 are in APHS where they belong.
The real reason for these rulings was not music, in my opinion, but
racism. AP has had no political power for 40 years on the state
level. No senator/assemblyman/governor is going to take the
Commissioner to task for the racist rulings and tick off the voters
in the other towns.
Dan, we need those sending district kids back here to avoid the
scenerio envisioned in your quote above.
