i dont think its accurate to say that one of the reasons convention hall will never make it, is beacsue of parking.  there are blocks and blocks of parking, all the way up to main street.  that is how parking was done back in the old days, when things filled up near the beach.  there could be a small bus/ trolly service used for large events, to transport people from different points.  its a good idea.

I’m not sure if it’s accurate that Convention Hall/Paramount can never turn a profit, but there are three big reasons as to why it’s not making money now.

  1. No shows.   There’s no reason why at least 15 events aren’t being scheduled each month.  A good venue would have that many in an off month and many more in top months.
  2. Restoration.  There’s a top music promoter in the area that HATES Convention Hall and the Paramount because of poor sound & lighting, heat problems, unfinished restoration, etc.  The building NEEDS a major restoration AND equipment upgrades.  It has the possibility of being a top performing venue but is utilizing horrible equipment right now and few people would want to put their shows their because of it.  In fact, some of the more popular acts to go to Convention Hall in the past few years were only placed there because of necessity (acts could only play on certain day and other buildings were already booked).
  3. Promotion.  I’ve seen ads for Convention Hall shows in Tri-City News  and the Coaster.  I have never seen them promote their events in the magazines people really turn to for events like the Aquarian / East Coast Rocker  or Upstage Magazine or Night & Day or The Rag.  Venues like Convention Hall do not simply draw from a 2 mile radius, they draw from a 30-50 mile radius.  For the events to do well, you need to reach outside of the area.  They might be advertising in the Asbury Park Press, which reaches far, but for 90% of the shows reaching an audience under 50 the Press no longer is effective.  You need to be in the publications that reach that audience.  Radio is also incredibly effective.  Their shows are not promoted on the stations that would bring the crowds.

In the end, it’s all about money.  They have not been spending anywhere near the money needed to make the venue work.  If that money was spent effectively, I believe you could come up with a business plan to make the facility turn a profit.
