Werner,
Great article.
The last paragraph says it all;
"There is now more than enough motivation in Atlantic Highlands for increased
preservation efforts and to make the community even a more appealing place to
live, work
and play. For sure, a clean, healthy coastal community that has plenty of
recreational
opportunities is a more attractive place to be in this world"
Asbury Park was founded on those principles. It was designed to be a healthy
place to get
away from the city, to breath the sea air and be in a healthy environment.
The boardwalk was once a playground for people of all walks of life, and music
also played
a big role in the history of Asbury.
I wish the town council would look to that history as a guiding light to where
we are
headed, but maybe it's just too late for them to get it.
I fear that Asbury is going to become another Pier Village, which is a
nightmare in my
opinion. I drove down there for the first time recently, and I was pretty
bummed out by
what I saw. I used to work at Peddler bikes near that site, and it was really
sad to see all
the nice little houses that people worked so hard for gone.
Pier Village itself looked very unattractive to me. I just don't get the "mall
by the sea with
condo's mentality" as an improvement. I'd hate to live in a place like that.
Plus, there was
no place to park, and the traffic was horrendous.
I guess if somebody likes to spend money and go shopping, then Pier Village is
great for
them.
Somehow, retailing seems to have become what one considers entertainment.
Not me though.
I recently saw a report on Sunday Morning on CBS about a resurgance of Drive In
movie
theaters in Texas.
It was pretty touching, because the people that were restoring old ones and
putting up
new ones said they still weren't making much money, nor did they think they
would, and
that making money wasn't the reason they were in it. They simply wanted to give
the
people something nice to enjoy.
Apparently the people love it, because cars were lined up every night, even to
the point of
having to turn people away. Night after night.
I miss that attitude in our country.
Sure, we all want to and need to make money, but these days that goal is taking
all of the
fun out of life, and the culture out of our country.
Jack
