For those interested, I copied xhtml11.conf to the directory I have my asciidoc source files (see http://www.methods.co.nz/asciidoc/userguide.html#X27) and changed a part of image-blockmacro from: <div class="title">{caption={figure-caption} {counter:figure-number}. } {title}</div> to: <div class="title">{title}</div> <div class="caption">{caption={figure-caption}}</div> And that is it. BTW.
