You can have a look at the html asciidoc generates to see what character is
generated, but I think its almost certainly a font "problem".  Your clef in
the email above displays as a square box for me. And if I show the github
page as source the symbol shows as a square box.

For an example in a book like this, you probably should stick to common
characters so your users are likely to have them, even if not as exciting
as music notation :)
