thank you for this information. I've had noted that asciidoctor is around but have ignored it so far. had a look today and this sure looks promising for the future of asiicdoc as a markup language. the speed up for larger documents is quite impressive, for instance (I saw a factor of 15 here). I will checkout how it does support mathjax in the next step. where I already failed, though, was to convert smoothly from xml to pdf. also, it seems, there is only some (not so well integrated) support for apache/fop but not for the dblatex route (which would be needed if equations come into play...). but it's a young project so I'll wait and see.
