Hello.

Interesting question.
I use asciidoc to author documents, reports, including professional,
quotes, invoices etc.
Your use case may be different.

At some point I, too, was wondering if I should switch to asciidoctor which
seemed more powerful.

Now I have chosen to stay with asciidoc but the reason is not obvious.
Asciidoc has drawbacks but asciidoctor feels to walk a wrong way.

After experimenting and discussing on this list I consider direct asciidoc
to HTML a simple but weak path, useful to get started, and now use asciidoc
as **a convenient syntax to author docbook** which I can render as many
formats including HTML.

HTML produced this way benefits from all the power of a real toolchain with
good handling of cross references, actual table of content, and all the
work people have done to allow custom rendering and style from a docbook
source.

When this is clear in one's mind, one no longer asks in asciidoc group help
about downstream topics or reinvent what people have already worked on for
years in the docbook realm.

Let's have each tool do one thing and do it right. Let's have standard
interfaces to ensure interoperability. Docbook is such an interface. When
asciidoc syntax fades away, a better one will replace and you'll still be
able to leverage work done on style and archival in docbook format.

Hope this helps and thanks for asciidoc authors and contributors.
