Hi Still works `a2x -k` on an exact copy of you initial post

Valid: `/* ... */`
Not Valid: `/*`
Valid `*/`

Valid: *`C/C++`*
Not Valid: *`C++`* or *C++*

gives docbook

<simpara>Valid: <literal>/* ... */</literal>
Not Valid: <literal>/*</literal>
Valid <literal>*/</literal></simpara>
<simpara>Valid: <emphasis role="strong"><literal>C/C++</literal></emphasis>
Not Valid: <emphasis role="strong"><literal>C++</literal></emphasis>
or <emphasis role="strong">C++</emphasis></simpara>

which looks right to me and the PDF dblatex makes looks to match.
Have you done some customising?

Cheers
Lex
