Please see http://asciidoctor.org/docs/migration/ for details about these
differences and how to restore all of them except for the smart quotes
syntax.

(It was too difficult to implement support for the old smart quote syntax
because there were too many cases when matching it became ambiguous. That's
of the key reasons we moved away from that syntax. Isolated backticks were
being used for too many different things).

To truly make parsing deterministic, we have to move away from the
multi-pass regexp approach and too a proper parser, which is on the roadmap
