Best of luck with your ongoing exploration to find an ideal conversion
toolchain for your AsciiDoc content! I'm glad you raised the questions that
you did because it helps us to assess the tools available in this ecosystem
and how they can be better explained, presented, or improved. We do have
our own opinions about things, which come through in our replies. But I
want to clarify that the only right software is the software that is right
for you. (If that's a2x.py, then great!)

If you discover something that makes any of these tools easy to use along
the way, I encourage you to share it so that future newcomers can build on
your efforts rather than hit the same stumbling blocks. They, in turn, will
help others. That's the virtuous cycle of OSS.
