i have to agree with kir.
we have used
htdig in the past on www.wuppertal-navigator.de
in the beginning it was quite good, but now as we index over
3000 different websites with over 150.000 pages htdig was
1) far to slow, indexing needed more than two days, databases
got very huge
2) search on the index was - compared to
aspseek - very slow
3) as kir told, relevance was not as
good as aspseek.
what i really like on aspseek is the grouping function. as i
said we are indexing 3000 different websites. when we used htdig
it could happen that the first pages (!), means the first 10, 20
or 30 matches came from the same site, eg. when the webmaster
had used meta-tags or so...
so in this
case the results were neary useless... many useres have complained about it (ok
they sometimes they have mixed
the search on "Wuppertaler Internetseiten" (pages from/about
wuppertal) and search on our "Branchenbuch" (yellow pages)).
with aspseek you can group the results, so - in the example -
you only get two entries in the result page even if the site
matches much more pages...
there is one thing i miss with aspseek: the fact that with htdig
you could restrict your searches to subfolders. in aspseek
you have to setup "subsets" for this. you can't just restrict to
any given subdir.... maybe i sometime find the time to patch
the sources.....
