ASN.1 has definitely NOT become obsolete. It is still going into new specifications, and a new edition currently being balloted in ISO (already approved in ITU-T) and will be published in the next few months. New specifications such as LTE (then next generation of mobile telephones) use ASN.1 as well as initiatives in Connected Vehicle Proving Center and some Financial Services standards in progress.
