Quoting from Stephen Walther, ASP.NET unleashed page 754:

"you should be aware of 3 points when using session state: first,
any items you add to session state remain there for the duration of
the user's visit to your web site. Normally, the items continue to
be associated with the user until the user shuts down his or her
browser, the item is explicitly removed from the session state, or
the user does not request a page for more than 20 minutes".

"..shuts down his or her browser" - I know by testing that this is
true, ie, you can set a session item, close/reopen the browser and
the session item is gone, but I dont understand how the asp.net
process knows this.
