Agree with Peter, somethings you can't just fake, so time to get busy
writing code. and learnasp.com has a lot fo good examples.

But if you don't have access to Visual Studio, you can still write
.NET code. All you need is a text editor, such as Notepad. In fact, a
solid chunk of the learnasp code was probably written in Notepad.

Then to compile it you need the .NET Framework SDK, available free
form our good friends at Microsoft.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/

Download the framework and install it first

Then get the SDK, which has the compiler all the other goodies you need

If notepad isn't helpful enough, and you'd like a free IDE tool, check
out WebMatrix...

http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/download.aspx?tabindex=4

Gives you a lot of the same goodies as Visual Studio.
