Guwahati, Oct. 16. — The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) sounds too concerned about the attempt made by former Assam chief minister and the president of the newly-floated Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive), Mr Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, to stage a comeback at the centre of Assam politics before the next Assembly polls after remaining on the sidelines for over four years.
It is uncharacteristic for a “revolutionary group” having “no faith” in the Indian Constitution and electoral politics, to watch with too much interest the activities of politicians deeply-rooted in the “democratic system”. The insurgent group has taken a vow to stymie Mr Mahanta’s comeback bid, more to avenge the stand taken by him against the Ulfa militants while he was the chief minister during 1996-2001, at the head of the Asom Gana Parishad government in the state.
Branding the former chief minister as the “mastermind” behind the “secret killings” of close relatives of Ulfa members during the AGP regime, the Ulfa leadership has given a call to the people of Assam not to attach any importance to Mr Mahanta anymore. The outfit has also made light of the enquiry commissions constituted by the political leadership in the state to find out the culprits behind the “secret killings” and termed those as nothing but mere “eyewash” and an attempt to hoodwink the families of the Ulfa members who had lost their near and dear ones to the bullets of the “secret killers”. However, Mr Mahanta and his then ministerial colleagues have been steadfastly refuting their involvement in the so called secret killings of Ulfa members and their kin.
Of late, the Ulfa has become increasingly vocal not only against Mr Mahanta but also against other national parties, particularly the BJP. Like Mr Mahanta, the NDA government also took a tough stand against the outfit and virtually brought it on its knees through unrelenting Army operations.
The Ulfa has enough reasons to want neither Mr Mahanta nor the BJP to rule the state after the next round of polls. The timing of Ulfa’s latest rhetorics against politicians and political parties is significant. The militant group apparently wants a “friendly government” at Dispur while it engages in peace talks with the Centre. Hence it’s new found interest in state politics.
