It seems that it might be musical chairs now but at one time (in March 2000) I and Prof. Summers were quite close to each other - within one mile . He says that he went to India six years ago - must be with Bill Clinton's delegation as Treasury Secy . I was in Delhi that day and passed in front  Maurya Sheraton Hotel where he was staying with his team (as did Pres. Bush recently) -while leaving MP House while meeting a friend visiting from Bhopal. Presumably Pres. Summers was also in the hotel that time.

Second, when Clinton visted Jaipur later in that trip -and famously dannced alongwith village women - I was nearby on top of a hill -visiting an isolated temple opposite Amber Fort - which Clinton climbed on elephants with his retinue -incl Treaury Secy Summers

It has been six years since I was last in India and more than 15 since I first came. The changes have been remarkable - in the economy, in the financial system, in education and health care - and as a consequence, there has been vast improvement in the lives of literally hundreds of millions of people. And the change in India's relations with the United States has been a profoundly positive development - one that I hope and trust will prove lasting. Today is April Foold Day - first April. This is the day when Harvard'd School of Education releases its list of those admitted to its master's programs. Two years ago I was admitted to one such program -- after I had already made many blunders.

The biggest being that I put out an ad late march in the local newspaper (Raj. Patrika) that I had secured admission to Harvard's M.Ed. program and that I needed someone to sponsor me for it by giving Rs 50 lakhs (USD 100,000).

I had made two mistakes which I realised soon after. One -- I had only been offered to be considered for admission to master's program -after been rejected from the doctoral one -in their March 19th  - I was exulting that I had already been chosen. Second, which I realised later was that the program was for only one year - and not two (as were other programs I had applied for) --so the cost was "only" about $50,000 (per year).

Thus, I was praying very very hard that I be selected therein - otherwise I would be at my wits end. On April 2nd, 2004 I went to the Cybercafe - I-Way of Satyam Computer group - dressed in my best -like a sacrificial goat - hoping to receive the dreaded reply from HGSE's Admissions office to my query last night (about 9am Harvard time).

I sighed with relief when I got the positive news - which I shared with you all on the Net.

And then started the search for some sponsor - another impossible task which turned out fine - inspite an adventurous but futile 20-day camp visit to Delhi. Money suppoprt from overseas though -again thru email - from Los Angeles - a school time friend.

Now
Even now I am on student visa - and it is surprising that Harvard President has been in japur this month - all the while I was here in US. It seems like a game of musical chairs. I left Jaipur to got to Harvard. Harvard President comes to Jaipur to someone fill the gap!!

Visa
The saying goes ' Fools go where angels fear to tread" -- but it seems some angel is still helping me. Though I have no money to pay for visa fees etc ($2400) - and no certainty that my current employer will agree to give in writing  that they will hire me for another year thru the contractor -- the conditions put forward by the visa contractor to sponsor me --- I am hopeful .

Yesterday - while on my first 9-5 job in US (except for when I worked at palatial Widener Library at Harvard) at the day-care center -as substitute teacher I recevied a phone call from my employer asking them to meet me regarding some previous doccuments (fingerprinting etc) which they had misplaced. So now I have an appointment to meet them -- I had been trying to gather courtage to fix such a meeting myself.

The day -care center day was great -in Virginia 's Falls Church county - USA's richest-in a Christian church. More in another email -- lost for Indian schools to learn from this group.
Had to wake up kids after their afternoon nap -- some needed extra effort in the ears--so monkey calls : Hoomp, Hoomp; bird calls: coor, coor; Lion growls : Uuungh, Uuungh!!
