Satra Mahasabha seeks Army help
From Our Spl Correspondent
NEW DELHI, Aug 22 Alarmed by the massive encroachment on land belonging to the satras, Asom Satra Mahasabha (ASM) has turned to the Army for assistance to restore its land. The unprecedented move came after all efforts to get back its land from the encroachers came a cropper. The ASM then discussed the problem with the Army and found that it was willing to help out.
The Mahasabha then undertook a thorough study of the 862 satras and handed over 10 cases to Army for action. They are expecting the Army to remove the encroachers and help build the boundary wall, restoring the land to the concerned satras.
President and general secretary respectively of ASM, Bhadra Krishna Goswami and Bhaba Goswami, told newsmen here today that some of the oldest and reputed satras faced threats to their existence because of the encroachments. We are waiting for the Army to restore to the satras, what rightfully belong to them, said the office bearers.
Some of the most revered institutions like Kaljhar and Alipukhuri Satras face uncertain future because of the encroachments. The Army has proposed to help us under its welfare programmes, Goswami said.
Satras, which have suffered a lot because of the encroachments, its traditional land holdings have also been taken away by the State Government under the Ceiling Act. A new thinking on part of the State Government is a must, they commented.
The ASM, meanwhile, is apprehensive about the early clearance of the Rs 250 crore proposal for protection, preservation and promotion of Satras. The proposal is to get the Central assistance from the Government of India under Clause six of the Assam Accord. The State Government is shortly submitting the proposal, which has been endorsed by the Satra Preservation Committee.
If this proposal lapses then it would be a great catastrophe for the Assamese people. Without the Satras, they can be no Assamese community and without any community, there can be no society, Goswami asserted, claiming 1.15 crore people are now disciples of the Satras.
The 862 Satras of their State are in need of funds for restoration and even Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi is keen that the preservation work is carried out without further delay, they said.
ASMs apprehension stems from the failure of the Government to have Majuli Island enlisted as the World Cultural Heritage Site this year. We had been demanding promulgation of an Ordinance or a Bill for long, but the State Government did not respond, they alleged. There can be no grater tragedy then this for the Assamese people, they said.
Meanwhile, the ASM, which is an apex body of 600 Satras, is inviting President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh to participate in the four-day festival, Setubandha in Dhekiajuli.
Representatives of various communities, tribes and groups from within and outside the North East have been invited to participate in the event. President of the Siromani Gurduwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), Amritsar, Avtar Singh, Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami, among others are attending the function as distinguished guests, they said.
