REMEMERING ANIMA BAIDEU: Jogen Kalita.

  Dear Friends,

We were shocked to hear the sad news of sudden demise of Assamese musical
icon Ms Anima Chakravorty on 25th Nov 2006. We can not believe that this
unique, natural, powerful melodious voice is no more in this earth now. Her
death is a great loss to the entire music world.

It was in September 1998, I was a Commonwealth Scholar then working for my
PhD degree at King's College, London. The NRI Assamese community in London and
we the overseas Students from different Univerities in UK together organised
the 550th Birth Anniversary of Srimanta Sankardev in London in a Huge way.

Dr Nagen Saikia, noted Assamese litterateur, then President of Asom Sahitya
Sabha was invited to the Celebration as the Chief Guest. Dr Audie Cantley,
noted educationist, the Author of ''the Assamese'' and Prof of London
University (SOAS) was invited as the Guest of Honour. The Councilor of Brent
Council, London and the Deputy Mayour of London was also present in the
Function as Special Guests. Dr Nagen Saikia inaugurated the Great Britain
Branch of Asom Sahitya Sobha on that particular day.

We invited Anima Baideu with her Husband Dr Ishwar Chakravorty to London to
perform in the colourful Cultural Function organised on the occassion.

Anima Baideu's live performance for more than an hour in that Cultural
Evening enthralled the large UK audience. She could become so close to many of
us in that evening in our first meeting with her rare personality. The way
the audience were involved and they enjoyed her presence, her music, her witty
speech in that evening which I can never forget.

A few days back before my coming over to London this September, we played and
enjoyed the CD that was made by the Organiser Ms Rini Kakoti in that evening
and we could never think of that Baideu will leave us so early.

After hearing the heartbreaking news, I talk to many NRI, Assamese families
in UK and also Overseas Scholars and Students from Assam studying in UK in
these days. All are schocked at this sad news.

We all express deep condolences to Ms Chakravorty family and pray the
Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul. The Assamese community abroad
and the people of Assam will always remember Baideu and her great contributions
to music.
