Shantikam:
I think the Assamese people should give more interest to the issue of
Assam and Asom. This news of s giving coverage to the Bodo literary
figures is important from another important angle. Because talking to
some people in Assam, I got a darker picture unless we the Assamese wake
up from their 'Hobo Diok' state to the reality of things.

The darker scenario is this, may be a bit exaggerated. for readers to
judge:

Think about this. Why do you think the Bodos and the Tai Ahoms are not
voicing their opposition to Asom forcefully the way they should have?.
According to the scenario, there is a darker political reason.

First, remember, that the proposal for name change to Asom came from
the caste Hindu Assamese people represented by Chandra Prasad Saikia.
After that if anybody is saying yes to Asom, are are basically from the
caste Hindu Assamee basically. Homen Borgohain already said no. Tai
Ahoms already said, if you change to Asom, we will have Assam in Upper
Assam. The Bodos are never for Asom. The Bodos are already claiming that
they are not Assamese. Thus the Tai Ahoms and the Bodoes have nothing to
do with renaming Assam to Asom.

Now here the realty sets in. If Assam really became Asom, the Bodos
will rightfully claim to the Central govt that Asom is only for the
caste Hindu Assamese and we not a part of this. So will the Tai Ahoms
will say. That way they will have a much stronger claim for a complete
separate state to the formed out of present Assam. And why the Congress
govt headed by Tarun Gogoi and assisted by several Bodo ministers will
care not to split Assam into Assam and Asom. Well you got the
picture...

Please think about it. I sincerely appeal to my fellow Assamese
brothers, here and in Assam, who are still taking a 'Hobo Diok' attitude
and are thinking who cares for the name and are not responding to the
petition to oppose the name change, please do care. Your future of the
state of Assam is at stake. It is in your hand.

Subject: [Assam] The Petition

Attaboy!!!!
Except the Dainik Asam, all the papers in Assamese covered the petition
and
wherever Rontu had influence the coverage was very detailed. It has been
a
fantastic public relation exercise . Today, the 4th, the Telegraph and
the
TOI (their Guwahati editions) have also covered it adequately.

What is heartening is that people are also reacting. There was a letter
to
the editor in the Amar Axam. The paper also gave front page coverage to
the
reaction of two Bodo Sahitya Akademy award winners who support Assam.

Meanwhile as I had stated earlier, I would olikle all of us also
individually send the copies of letters to persons whom we know so that
they, if they are interested, know the facts and the reasonings fully.

Yesterday we had an informal meeting where we discussed FASS as well as
NEPIF. Uttam Teron of Parijat Academy was also present. The beginning has

been heartening.

I hope all the NRIs of Assam origin would attend the internatinal
conference
at Guwahati on 29/30 January 2007.

Regards and best wishes
