Jatin Mipun passes away

GUWAHATI, Jan 15: Noted litterateur and Director of State Fire Service 
Organization Dr Jatin Mipun passed away on Saturday night in Goa due to heart 
attack. The 54-year-old IPS officer, known for his contribution to Asomiya, 
Mising and English literatures, went to Goa with his wife and two sons on 
January 10. On Saturday night, he suffered from a stroke and was rushed to a 
hospital where he breathed his last at 2 a.m. 
Born at Gandhia Mising Gaon under Nakachari mouza in Jorhat district on August 
1, 1952, Mipun started contributing to different magazines and newspapers from 
1968. Mipun, who began his career as a lecturer of Sociology in Dhemaji College 
and Dibrugarh University, joined as the First District Research Officer in 1979 
at Diphu. He joined as ACS(1) in 1980 and was posted as an Extra Assistant 
Commissioner (EAC) in Dhubri. Mipun was awarded the PhD degree by Dibrugarh 
University for his thesis entitled Mising Samaj aru Sanskritit Adhunikotar 
Pravab (Influence of Modernism in Mising Society and Culture) in April, 1998. 
He joined in State Fire Service as Director (in the rank of DGP, Asom Police) 
on September 30, 1997. Mipun, who was promoted as IGP on August 14, 2002, was 
due to retire on July 31, 2012. He was the first person from the Mising tribe 
to join as the Indian Police Service in 1983 in Asom-Meghalaya cadre. 
Mipun’s best known novel Miksijili, for which he got Ambikagiri Rai Choudhury 
Award from the Axom Xahitya Xabha, was telecast by Doordarshan as a serial. 
Besides this novel, other books of Mipun are Kangkanor Prithivi, Axom Darshan, 
Mipak Makab, Tani Agom, Joyosreer Kothare, Lajjar Desot Laj Pai Ahilo, Kati 
Bihur Ruprekha, Axom Darshan, Barta Pakhilir Nirvachit Golpo, Missing Culture 
of Assam etc. Another book of Mipun, who was the chief editor of magazine Barta 
Pakhili, which is to be released soon is Atai. Dupor Nixar Banhit is the volume 
of his collection of poems. His Barta Pakhilir Nirvachit Golpo was released on 
January 6 which was his last meeting on dais. Mipun was also awarded Bharat 
Jyoti award in 2003 by the India International Society.
Mipun’s body was taken to Guwahati today and was taken to the State Fire 
Service, DGP office and Axom Xahita Xabha office before being cremated at 
Sonaighuli, Kahilipara where he owns a plot of land. Mipun is survived by his 
wife Nilima Mipun, also an ACS officer, and three sons. He was residing at his 
Patarkuchi house in Basistha. 
Meanwhile, Asom Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Ajai Singh, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, 
AGP president Bridabon Goswami, Axom Xahitya Xabha president Kanaksen Deka, 
Asom Police DGP RN Mathur have condoled death of Dr Mipun whom they termed as 
an able administrator and a powerful writer.
Condoling the death of Mipun, Editor of Varta Pakhili Brajen Deka said, “Asom 
has lost a powerful writer of recent times. The Varta Pakhili and the AXX are 
gong to organize a condolence meeting at Bhagawati Prasad Baruah Bhavan in the 
city on January 18 at 3 pm.”
