Sometime back, the State Assembly decided to change the name of Assam to
‘‘Asom’’. Since then, people and some of the print media have started using the
word as ‘‘Asom’’. A car number plate even sports it as ‘‘Axom’’ instead of the
regulation ‘‘AS’’.
However, in the 33rd National Games, the host contingent carried a placard with
‘‘Assam’’ written in bold letters in the opening ceremony. Till now, all
announcement in the Games’ commentaries are as ‘‘Assam’’ and all the team-signs
are also as ‘‘Assam’’. Even the number plate on the Governor’s car is still
‘‘Assam’’. The Sentinel’s website address is also still ‘‘sentinelassam’’,
though the paper uses the State’s name as ‘‘Asom’’. Similarly The Assam Tribune
is still ‘‘Assam Tribune’’ and not ‘‘Asom Tribune’’.
It appears that there is no coherent policy for implementing the name ‘‘Asom’’
in place of ‘‘Assam’’. The National Games would have been an ideal opportunity
to popularize the name ‘‘Asom’’, but it seems nobody thought about it. Are we
really serious about the change of the State’s name?
