Job Description

mission. Unitus dramatically accelerates the growth of microfinance 
institutions (MFIs) to reach 
poor households and demonstrates that MFIs can be run as profitable, 
large-scale, poverty focused 
business with links to formal capital markets. With 13 partners worldwide 
serving more than 
1,300,000 clients already, Unitus aims to reach 15 million clients by 2015. 
Unitus has been named 
one of the most innovative nonprofit organizations by Fast Company magazine for 
two years in a 
row. In addition, Unitus was named one of the best places to work in Seattle by 
Seattle 
Metropolitan Magazine.

Over a three-year project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, two 
teams comprised of 
4 consultants and an analyst will be charged with conducting an in-depth 
analysis of the current 
efficiency levels of five Unitus MFI partners and helping them to identify 
breakthroughs in their 
operational efficiency and productivity. One team is based in Bangalore, India 
and the other team 
in Redmond, Washington.

The two teams collaborate and share information amongst themselves and the 
project funder on a 
regular basis. At the end of the project, the teams will be responsible for 
publishing and 
promoting their findings.

Position: Consultant, Microfinance Efficiency Solutions

The position requires an ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, and a 
capacity to 
interact effectively with people of other cultures. Notwithstanding technical 
competence, the 
successful applicant will possess a spirit of creativity, an independent work 
ethic, and 
preferably knowledge of the microfinance industry.

Specific job requirements include:
• Create comprehensive and insightful analysis of current MFI operations 
including process mapping 
and financial and operational analysis
• Work closely with MFIs on the ground and remotely to identify opportunities 
for improvements and 
design and test innovations in processes or technology
• Rigorously analyze data and communicate findings in a clear and cogent way to 
the MFI, across 
the Unitus team, with the Gates Foundation, and with the industry
This position is based in Bangalore, India, and reports to the Principal 
Consultant, Microfinance 
Efficiency and Innovations. The position works closely with the rest of the 
Efficiency Project 
Team, as well as Solutions and Portfolio Management teams.

Skills Needed
• Top notch quantitative analysis and consulting skills
o Process mapping
o Root cause analysis
o Productivity sensitivity analysis
o Cost benefit analysis
• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
o Cogent analysis and recommendations
o Presentation skills
• Excellent project management skills
• Expert level Excel skills

Requirements:
• MBA or related degree preferred
• 5+ years experience of which at least 2 years in consulting or other 
operational analysis
• Ability to travel both within India and internationally – up to 40%
• Microfinance or Banking industry experience is an added advantage
• Prior experience in product development, including cost benefit analysis, and 
prototyping and 
marketing new products is beneficial
