Like everything else, sacrifice is a broad term.
I like to look at the positive side of this sacrifice - without looking for any
name, fame or 'moksha', and add compassion and caring to be the reasons behind
it.

Some good examples:

Parents' sacrifice for their children.
Grown children sacrificing for their parents, siblings or other relatives.
Teachers' devoting their lives for their students' benefit.

And yes, if one looks at these from a 'different' angle, it would be like -
yes, they are just doing it for their own children/parents/students. So! and so
what???

Everything does not have to have a hidden purpose - a profit motive.

make peace with ourselves. World peace must develop out of inner peace.”- Dalai

like a blade of grass”

PachauriDear Uttamda!By sacrificing, I meant, any hard working person, who robs
of his family's due share in time/attention for the extra effort he/she puts
in, not necessarily by design, but through circumstances. The sacrifices of our
politicians is what you said.-manoj

That is the point. Being aware of the fact that a 'prize' be it Nobel, Oscar,
Miss Universe, Karmashree whatever, 'may' have latent 'bias' or may not have
any at all; yet we do not have to trivialize ourselves or display our envious
selves by denigrating the persons receiving those. It is was given by the
concerned panel in its wisdom. We do not have to applaud either, if we do not
feel like. I personally feel proud with any human achievement, be it an
American, Iraqi, Iranian, Cuban, Indian, Pakistani, Assamese.. no matter which.
If the concerned person has done good and is relevant, then his contribution
shall be felt by the community anyway.

Another thing, I have my personal reservation about this 'sacrifice' thing. A
person sacrifices because he feels good by doing so; there is no altruism
involved. Some people need name, some may need fame, some may need money and
some may need sacrifice to make them feel good.

And forgive me, if the 'sacrifice' of our leaders, hailed by so many in the
eighties, that catapulted them to corrupting power and loot in Assam has made
me a little cynic. After all, a person is fashioned by the surrounding
circumstances:-)

Well said Manoj.

Indians can and should be proud of the fact that Dr. Pachauri (even though
indirectly) was awarded the prize and it is he, who will represent his
organization to receive the award.

There is some bias (perceived or otherwise) in the selections of Nobel winners,
but to harp on some bias or to bring up useless issues like Dr. P is
undeserving smacks off, at best as plain jealousy, and at the worst a visceral
hatred for India or anything India by some.
To tell the truth, I was equqlly proud that Dr. Abdus Salam (Pakistan) &
Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh) when they won the Nobel.

Dear allI think we are indulging in unnecessary arguments, quite characteristic
of underdeveloped mindset. Dr. Pachauri has worked very hard to reach this
position and the family very much deserve to bask in the glory for a while, for
I am sure they had sacrificed a huge portion of the attention they would have
otherwise got from him. In fact I being friend of his son-in-law I too was
present on the day of felicitation organised at India Habitat Centre, next day.
Mr Pachauri was very categorical in stating that this is not a nobel prize to
his ownself. He is a great man and 'hatir p*****t tora formuti mari labh
nai'.Further discussion will only trivialize those indulge in it. -manoj

Let us think it this way. ( I am ignomarus so far as the process of determining
as to who should receive Nobel Prize in any discipline). I think, the 'bias'
factor definitely plays a part. Had the panel of judges been different, had the
policies of the Nobel Committe at a given time been different, the awards might
have gone to different recipients. Am I thinking straight? So, we do not know
what factors played a part in this year's peace nobel. While discussing these
things, we may rise above 'national feelings'. Had Mr. Pachauri been an
Assamese, I might not have been convinced. Same feeling for Al Gore despite his
a-tree-fallen-in-the-forest kind of analogy. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
