Hi,

I saw the Marine Corps marathon today ( I cannot participate since I do not eat
that much :-) - I would die of malnutrition if I started marathon training -
hiking or walking is good for me) I was volunteering for www.ashanet.org/dc
and was surprised to see that one the one hand all ASHA runners of Indian
origin were in their twenties and those of European origin were in their
forties or fifties. It seems Indians (in USA) are learning running etc recently
http://www.marinemarathon.com/
http://www.marathoncharitypartners.org/ of which ASHA for education is a
member/partner

A little girl from another running group wore a T-shirt "One Day I will run
like my mom". Free massage was proivded to runners. Thousands ran from all over
the world Man winner was Ethiopian 2hr20 min, woman winner 2 hr, 51 min was
first time marathoner from DC itself.

>From the start/finish site (US Marine Corps War Memorial) , where we were
>based, I called up my Harvard sponsor in LA whose friends of Loma Linda Lopers
>had come to participate. He was still doing his Sunday morning10 mile run
>while talking to me -- on my first morning in USA Sep 5, 2004 .I had run my
>longest (to date) in USA 5 and a/one half mile -along with him - he had run 8
>miles. I was in formal trousers and sandals. He runs two or three marathons a
>year.

ARMY STYLE MARATHONS:
It seems the trend is catching up in Indian metros as well. Indian army of
course has a different style of marathons - doing 25 kilometers (13 miles) each
night (for 2 weeks at a stretch) in North East's rainforests carrying 100
pounds (one mann = 40 kilos - incl a 8 kilo rifle ) of backpack in pitch
darkness (no flashlights or the enemy will shoot at sight).

Thats what my father used to do - and he liked it so much that he volunteered
to take the workload of even his colleagues - he liked environment and brought
back to his desert based house pencil thin bamboos, caladiums, choleas, lilies
, crotons and a variety of plants and ofcourse two native semi-wild dogs (from
interiors) which were so sensitive to sound that even a scooter/car sound would
send the puppies scurrying for cover (seems they were brought up in total
silence).

Western style marathons seem good to develop stamina, discipline and burn
calories but not enough to make you risk-takers. For that you need mountain
climbing, motorbike racing or even football or soccer or field hockey . These
sports help build strategic outlook.

Though marathons are good for fundraising since in the West a lot of people
have extra energy to burn and do social good as well!!! Also the Marine Corps
Marathon is all about honoring the marines which many Americans were doing by
mentioining names of marines on their T shirts whom they sought to honor.

Any comments?
