saja has started a discussion page on the ethics of such sting operations, in
the context of government complicity in such crimes.

On October 25, Tehelka, an Indian investigative magazine, published a special
feature
devoted to the Hindu-Muslim riots* that took place in Gujarat in 2002,
and the state government's active role in fomenting the violence
against Muslims. It refers to the gruesome events, which some have
labeled genocide, as “the most important story of our time," and in the
last week it has in fact generated headlines in India and abroad (see
links to coverage at the bottom). However, while the magazine’s editors
boldly defend their sting journalism, some question the ethics of such
reporting.
