We don't have to pay penance for the sins of those who we do not consider our own, or identify with them in some way or other. Criminal or sub-human actions of a few sub-humans cannot and should not tarnish everyone.
It does not mean that we are somehow attempting to justify or shove under the rug the actions of a few barbarians. All societies have a segment of it that is sub-human. The difference lies in how the enlightened segment DEALS with such barbarism. That is where the role of the Assam government, created in the mold of the Indian one and as dysfunctional as its role model and its operators' responsibilities and performance comes into the picture. So also the role of those who ought to know better, how they responded --- as spectators in a sport or as spineless humanoids or as responsible humans. We have been acutely aware of the state of the media. But we could not find our voices then. Why this outrage all of a sudden ? It points to only one reason: That our outrage is selective. Nothing to write home about if anyone asked me. Ultimately the "WHY ME" attitude is bound to come home to roost, sooner or later. Should the same media have highlighted the acts of righteous courage ? Did they? Should they? Who will ask those questions and when?
