Mukulda,
Malfunction of electronic components in transmission control do cause serious
problem. The owner of the Mercedes can expect a recommendation from the repair
shop to replace the whole transmission.
I owned a Nissan Murano (automatic continuously variable transmission) that
suddenly lost acceleration on the highway and ruined a trip. The car wouldn't
pick up above 30 mph. I started driving back home and after 10/20 miles the car
started running fine. This was on a Saturday. I drove around during the weekend
with the "Check Engine" light on. On Monday, I took it to the dealer. They
called me to give the bad news that there is electronic speed sensor module
problem and the whole transmission has to be replaced at $6000. As you may have
guessed the warranty was just over after three years. I got the car out of the
shop without getting the transmission replaced. I noticed that the "Check
Engine " light was reset by the dealer. I drove the car for another three
months without a problem. However, at that point I replaced the Murano with a
Mazda CX-9 and traded the Murano against the new car.

I contacted Nissan on the problem. They couldn't offer any technical
assistance. I also had many discussions in the Nissan Users' Club, without any
real help.

In short, the modern cars are becoming too complicated for maintenance. Quick
and economical repair by replacing individual components has become impossible.

  Dilip
