O'Mahanta,
Thanks for checking. It appears to be a hoax.Mars apparently appears bigger at
times but not to the Moon's size.

Sigh...

Mars DID make a close approach to Earth in August, but it was back in August of
2003. And when it did make that close approach, Mars appeared nowhere near the
size of the moon. Mars' angular diameter on that day was still about 1/75th the
angular diameter of the moon. This email keeps getting spread around every
summer, and even for the year 2003, it was only half-true.

No. This is a hoax email which was wrong when it first appeared in August 2003,
and gets more wrong each year when it resurfaces. Mars is really far from
Earth, and can never appear as large as the Moon. On August 27 2010 Mars will
be about as far from Earth as it is possible to get, and will be an
insignificant red dot in our western sky just after sunset. Please send an
email back to whoever sent you this and tell them to stop spreading false
information.

No. First of all, this e-mail started a few years ago when Mars was at its
closest, but that still puts it much farther away from us than the moon. At its
closest, Mars is 35 million miles away; the moon is under 250,000 miles away.
There is no way Mars would ever appear to be as large as the moon, as cool as
this would be.

FALSE, this is called, "The Mars Hoax". It started in 2003 when Mars made it's
last closest approach to Earth. IN A TELESCOPE, Mars will appear about the same
size as the full moon. The hoaxers left off the words "IN A TELESCOPE" and the
rest is history. We get this hoax every year during July and August.

If you mean seeing Mars as an actual "disk" in the sky, no, that is not true.
Gravity would pull Earth and Mars together if they were that close. Plus, it's
also physically impossible for Mars to move into our orbit.

If you say you got a e-mail that said XYZ, who am I to disagree? You probably
actually did get an e-mail like that.

This fake e-mail about Mars and the Moon has been going around for years and
years.

You realize that if Mars was ever as close to the Earth as the moon, it would
mess up the earth.

Mars is too far away to resemble the moon. It'll always appear as a star to the
naked eye on Earth.

O'Deka:

Aapuni kintu eibaar 'hoax--ot porile'.  This apparently is another 'urban
legend'.

As you and others know, I am no astronomer, not even an astrologer. But the
claim sounded a little far-fetched, that Mars will look like the moon. So I
Googled  " two moons". And guess what I found:
