Chandan Here is some additional ammunition for those who oppose the dam. So far I know the Lower Subansiri and all Himalayan dams in India (including the Tehri dam) are being designed only for 8.5 mag earthquake. The Assam 1950 earthquake was of 8.7 mag. There are clear predictions that there may be earthquake of even of bigger magnitude. Does anybody know what is NHPC's justification under designing for this das in critical siesmic zone in North East? I think any dam in Assam must be built for at least 9.5 mag earthquake.
