Any Takers for this Idea?
Coming back to Guwahati this time, I have realized that most working women are facing the problem of having to juggle housework and office as there is an acute scarcity of trained domestic help. My parents’ generation are all struggling with various old-age problems, and still have to run the household and sometimes also have to take care of their little grandchildren during the day. I was told of how some young women from villages (mostly school dropouts) came to the city seeking employment only to face acute hardships and were forced to even sell their own bodies to survive. This set me and a friend thinking about the possibility of connecting these two sets of people (and needs) by setting up a little institute to train and equip young, unemployed women to become either trained housekeepers or trained to provide basic care for the young and the old at home. But we are not sure how to proceed from here. We would like to appeal to anyone out there who is reading this letter, who feels he/she agrees with us and has something to contribute towards making this happen. To get in touch, contact 094354-05301 and 094360-06754 or send an e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected]. Let us not just keep talking about our problems; let us get together to solve this problem. Meenaxi Barkataki, Guwahati.
