Tricolor hoisted at press club

GUWAHATI, 26 JANUARY: Defying the diktat of separatist militants in northeast 
India, the media fraternity of the city has celebrated the 64th Republic Day of 
India at Guwahati Press Club. Following the tradition, the  media persons and 
other patriotic citizens had assembled in the campus of the pioneer press club 
of the region in the morning today and hoisted the national flag.
Social worker and a former legislator of Assam, Ajay Dutta unfurled the 
tricolor in presence of the media persons  and paid his heartfelt tributes to 
the martyrs of India’s Freedom movement.
In his brief speech, Dutta remembered the contribution of thousands of martyrs 
for their sacrifices which finally brought the freedom to India. He paid his 
tribute s to all martyrs and expressed dismay that ‘we are yet to identify many 
martyrs and their families living in different parts of the country’.
“The contribution of each and every freedom fighter of our liberation movement 
against the British colonial power should be recognized and documented,” added 
Dutta.
Earlier senior journalist Hiten Mahanta briefed the gathering about the 
importance of Republic Day and also mentioned about the initiative taken by a 
section of journalists and patriotic citizens who had come out to defy the 
militants’ call to boycott the celebrations of both the Republic and 
Independence Day.
Later the participants including journalists Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava 
Thakuria, DN Singh, Pranabjit Doley, Pramod Kalita  with Jagadindra 
Raichoudhury,  Jaharlal Saha etc also took out a procession  on the streets 
chanting patriotic slogans.
