Assam journalist raises harassment complaint Guwahati, 7 Dec: While Tarun Tejpal is behind bars and justice AK Ganguly is facing roaring condemnations for sexually assaulting their juniors, an Assam lady journalist has come forward with a complaint against her former senior for committing the same. Homen Borgohain, editor of Amar Asom, a popular Assamese daily newspaper published from GL Publications, Guwahati is facing the music for his alleged sexual advances to one of his lady juniors in the newspaper office some 10 years back. The complainant, who had recently received a positive note from the National Human Rights Commission against her grievance as the case is ‘under consideration’, has now written to the Assam police chief, Mr Jayanto N Choudhury, to book the senior journalist under the relevant law. The complainant claims that she had similar experiences of prolonged abuses by Homen Borgohain in 2003, when she used to work for Amar Asom as its chief sub-editor. “Homen Borgohain, with whom I was working in Amar Asom, took the advantage of his position and post in the office and continued to harass me for nearly three years. I had to face repeated sexual and professional harassments from Mr Borgohain during those days,” she said. She also added: “The final sexual assault, I faced on 4 September 2003 in the office of Amar Asom, forced me to leave the job.” After the last assault, she registered a case in Assam State Commission for Women and another with Assam Human Rights Commission. A protest meeting was also organised in the local press club on 12 September 2003 by various journalist organisations supporting her cause. She also lodged an FIR at Paltan Bazar police station of Guwahati on 17 September 2003, but according to her, the state police did not proceed accordingly. “With utter dismay I would like to place here that the State police did not investigate the case properly and even they did not dare to call Homen Borgohain for interrogation. Even I had a personal meeting with the then DGP,” she said. _______________________________________________ assam mailing list [email protected] http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org
