At a meeting at Guwahati Press Club on 11 January, speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (also known as the Azad Hind Fauj) in 1943 and fought many battles under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s command for the motherland . Organised by the Assam branch of the All India Patriotic Forum, the meeting started with floral tributes to Devchoudhury, who passed away on 11 December 2013. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury led an active life till his death. A lieutenant of the INA, he was attached to Netaji’s office in Rangoon for some time and was engaged in preparing a map of the North-east. He also wrote a book titled Sei Rnanangan, narrating his experience in the freedom struggle. The speakers included freedom fighters Jatin Goswami and Ganesh Chandra Das, Professor Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Hiten Mahanta, KN Devchoudhury and Pramod Kalita. Ropum Barua, president of the Assam Patriotic Forum, said INA soldiers fought in Manipur (liberated Moirang by hoisting an IndianTricolour) on 14 April 1944, in Nagaland and also in Assam. http://119.82.71.49/thestatesman/epapermain.aspx?pgno=16&eddate=2014-1-20&edcode=820009 _______________________________________________ assam mailing list [email protected] http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org
