AMCH doctor to do cancer stem cell research in Harvard Medical School From our Staff Correspondent Dibrugarh, Nov 15: An Assamese doctor has been offered the post of visiting research scholar at Forsyth Institute of Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, under the Harvard University Catalyst Programme. In her new assignment, Dr Gayatri Gogoi, who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Assam Medical College and Hospital, will collaborate in a cancer stem cell research programme. She will do her research with renowned Assamese stem cell scientist, Dr Bikul Das, to acquire skill on advanced stem cell culture training. Talking to The Sentinel at her residence, Dr Gogoi said that it was a surprise for her that such an opportunity came her way while she was in USA to present a paper at the third International Translational Medicine Conference held from November 3 to November 5 at Las Vegas. “When I went to visit Forsyth Institute Laboratory of Harvard, I was given the offer as they were highly appreciative of my deep interest in doing research. Working in medical colleges in Assam, where opportunities are limited, to make the journey to work in Harvard is really exciting,” she exclaimed. Dr Gogoi is currently engaged in research project on breast cancer at AMC with grant from Indian Council of Medical Research. Previously, she completed a study on breast cancer under Srimanta Sankardev University and Health Sciences. She is now planning to work in Kavikrishna Laboratory at Biotech part at IIT Campus, Guwahati, where Dr Das is the director, for her initial laboratory work. Dr Gogoi is the daughter of Pranita Gogoi and Dinesh Gogoi of Dhemaji. She said that her seniors, three professors in the Department of Pathology, AMC, inspired her to work in the sphere of cancer. “But I must also confess that all this would not have been possible without the support of my spouse Sanjib Hazarika,” she added.
