Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora new Sabha presidentSANJOY KR HAZARIKA

 
  DERGAON, Nov 16 – Noted writer Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora has been elected as the 
new president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary body of the State.
In the Sahitya Sabha election, Dr Bora defeated his rivals Dr Naren Kalita and 
Dr Puspa Gogoi.
According to the results declared at the 13th executive meeting held today at 
Dergaon Marwari Dharamshala, Dr Bora secured 397 votes, while Dr Kalita and Dr 
Gogoi got 197 and 193 votes respectively.
On the other hand, the present general secretary, Prahlad Tasa, was elected as 
the new vice president of the literary body. Tasa secured 442 votes, while the 
other candidates, Jadav Sarmah and Dr Malini, received 202 and 83 votes 
respectively.
Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, the present vice president, was elected as the new 
general secretary. Dr Rajbongshi, who secured 361 votes, defeated Upendrajit 
Sarmah and Devojit Bora. Sarmah and Bora got 178 and 166 votes respectively.
Meanwhile, the executive meeting chaired by outgoing Sabha president Imran Shah 
adopted several resolutions. It was decided to expel one Biren Saikia, who had 
filed a case against the election process at the Jorhat district court and 
later got it transferred to the Gauhati High Court, from the Sabha. In another 
resolution, it was decided to serve a showcause notice on noted writer 
Atulananda Goswami for his alleged protests against some activities of the 
Sabha.
The Sabha also adopted a resolution to demand of the Central Government to 
start a chair in the name of Srimanta Sankardev, where proper research and 
analysis of the life and works of the Vaishnavite saint and social reformer can 
be made at the national level.
The meeting also decided to amend the byelaws of the Sahitya Sabha. It was 
resolved that the names of the president and the secretary would henceforth be 
sent by the district and branch committees.
Today’s meeting also resolved to demand a full-fledged Assamese department in 
the Delhi University.
The executive meeting also decided to set up the Sabha’s eighth office in 
Kohima.
