Assam after Independence released By our Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, March 5: Assam after Independence, the first post-independence contemporary history of Assam, was released by noted educationist Padmabhusan Professor Mrinal Miri at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi on Sunday.
A panel discussion on this period was also held this evening. The discussion moderated by noted film critic Utpal Barpujari was participated by renowned actor Adil Hussain, columnist Sanjay Hazarika and historian Sanamni Singh Yambem. Assam after Independence is written by senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar and published by the Nanda Talukdar Foundation. This project for the first time has systemically documented the post-Independence period, which has seen many upheavals from the great earthquake to the rise and fall of the ULFA. The book has 12 chapters, each chapter dwelling with one major event of the period like Assam Agitation, resurgence of the Bodos, besides the intricate and never published chronicles of politicking in Assam from 1950-1990. “This book is written not from the perspective of a historian, but from the perspective of a journalist,” said Mrinal Talukdar, who has been specializing on contemporary Assam history for quite some time. The panelists of the discussion thanked the publisher and writer Mrinal Talukdar for documenting the entire period for posterity. All were unanimous that there was no such previous book where the post-Independence contemporary history could be studied thoroughly and systematically. “This would henceforth fill up the void long felt,” said Prof. Mrinal Miri.
