Friends, I have heard Mr. Tharoor's speech on several occasions on the issue of next prestigious position for the top notch job for the U.N. He appears to be a nice guy, very competent, communicative, articulate, ambitious and we all feel so proud that he is an Indian. From his various staements I feel that he likes more to be associated with the dream of global association rather than representing the hopes and aspirations of the majority of Indian people who to be honest are poor and deprived by international standard.
Kofi Anand, the current U.N, chief has made a name for himself and his family but I am not sure he has put the name of the country on a pedestal. India represents one-sixth of the global population and also represents considerble land mass. It is a nuclear power and a swiftly emerging economic power. The real recognition of the stature and position of India is for people like Mr. Tharoor and the Indian government is to lobbly hard among the 191 members of the United Nations to become a permanent member of the Security Council, That is where the real clout lies. The tenure of the Secretary General is a temporary one. Secretary General comes and goes and soon forgotten but the position of the permanent member of the Security Council is PERMANENT and guaranteed. How many can remember the name of the first Secretary General ? In contrast quite a lot know the the five permanent members of the Security Council. I believe "country before individual". As Lachit Borphukan said "dekhot koi momai daangar nahai". Best wishes. Nilmoni Sikdar Quinta Hottsfield Hartley Longfield, Kent U.K.
