With English medium education virtually the norm rather than an 
exception proficiency in one's Mother tongue has suffered irreparably. 
Very rarely one would opt for a vernacular school even in smaller 
towns. While the importance of English is not disputed what is 
alarming is the neglect of the mother tongue. 

Can one be as proficient in his Mother tongue if the medium of 
instruction in schools is English?

Students of vernacular schools however can master the English language 
as they go for higher education. At least our elders did.

Not able to read/write one's mother tongue cannot be a matter of 
pride. This trend must be arrested and the effort must start at each 
home.
