My sincere gratitude to Rini Kakati for highlighting the old age issue and the noble venture taken up by Suchibrata Roy Choudhury.
When Suchbrata Roy Choudhury had come to Delhi in 2001 to receive her Sahitya Akademi award we had the opportunity to interact with this great visionary. I was then working with Katha, the NGO working in the field of literacy and literature. We had an interactive session with her along with other writer-activists from North East and Delhi. Besides the problems faced by regional literature she had talked on many social issues including her plan to build a Home for aged in Guwahati. Though an extremely soft spoken lady she appeared to me as a quietly powerful and strong willed person. It is a moving experience to know a person like her and I congratulate her for being able to realised her dream of setting the Home. But than the Home can not be completed and run on congratulatory messages. It needs support in forms of cash and kind from able and willing hearts. The flow of supports can be from not only the presently discussed-about NRAs but also from living around Suchibrata Roy Choudhury. Help for this kind of organisations doesnt have to be only in cash. Individuals having different skills and expertise can devote time and energy to make the Home more beautiful. For instance doctors can give free services, hospitals can offer free treatment, or a storyteller can spend some meaningful moment with the people at Home. Even a gardener, who cannot be expected to offer financial help, can offer his skill in maintaining the garden of the Home.
