"In order to prevent influx of foreign nationals and resist inflow of
people from other parts of the country who come to settle in Assam,
systems like the Restricted Area Permit and Innerline Permit must be
introduced also in case of Assam," demanded Asom Sanmilita Mahasangha
(ASAM), a conglomerate of a number of indigenous groups of people of
the State.
At a seminar held at the premises of the Jagiroad College on the
topic `The future of indigenous people of Assam', the leaders of the
organisation expressed serious ire over the continuing "politickings"
over the baffling issues of the region by the successive governments
leading to serious infringement of rights of the natives.
The meeting held on August 9 was chaired by Prof Tulsi Bordoloi,
former president of Tiwa Mathonlai Tokhra (Tiwa Sahitya Sabha) and
one of the office bearers of the Mahasangha.
In the meeting speakers aired their pragmatic views upon the
grievances of the indigenous populace of the State and expressed that
any alternative for the people in today's juncture was to make a
united bid so that there was proper resistance in all such matters.
In the seminar, the working chairman of the Mahasangha, Matiur Rahman
expressed that the natives of Assam had a glorious heritage of
harmony and unity as a result of which their common interests had
been preserved at all crises. He said the time had come once again to
prove their mettle, as othewise, one by one, each of the races living
in this soil since time immemorial will be wiped out.
Other speakers who spoke in the seminar were Nameswar Boro, Surendra
Nath Deka and Ananda Ram Deuri. In his presidential note, Prof Tulsi
Bordoloi said it was time for every indigenous group to make some
soul searching and share the concerns of the Mahasangha.
Citing the case of the plight of the indigenous Tripuris, he said in
Assam too, there was manifestation of the same crisis and it was
already very late for a solution. He hoped that the efforts of the
Mahasangha to bring all the indigenous people together for a
permanent redressel to the situation which will be supported by all.
