For information to all,
Willem van Schendel, an academician of University of Amstardam has written a
book called, The Bengal Borderland, published by Anthem South Asian Studies.
The whole book is relevant for study of migration, but Chapter 9 -'Migration,
Fences and Deportation' may be of particular interest in the view of the
discussion on illegal migration.
The book is priced for Rs.395/. A must read for those who are concerned of the
issue.

Subject: [asom] Hard truth & Bangladeshi

Dear All

Appreciating the emotion behind the Infiltration cause,
language census statistic Excel file(source Census India) for you all to
decipher and understand the realpolitik.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/files/misc/C-16.XLS

The actual world outside this blog is different.

Infiltration was there and I once again think it is far more less
in the one and half decade than the previous one. I live in
Guwahati and as a professional journalist of past two decades
working very closely with AASU, BSF and all political parties
beside being a former hard core Assam agitation worker, I have
convinced myself that infiltration is much less in the past
decade .(You are free to have have your own opinion and I shall
respect that)

Sporadic infiltration is still there but I refuse to believe there
are large scale infiltration in the past 15 years. It is simply
not possible.

There is a confusion between PUSHBACK and DEPORTATION. Over the
past quarter of a century hardly 1000 have been deported and
several more thousand have been pushed back.

The convict Bangladeshi is taken to the nearest border point by a
constable of Assam Politics. First BSF is informed by Assam Police
with the court document. Then BSF contact BDR. BDR collects the
court document and contact their police who in turn send their
own men to the particular village inside Bangladesh of the convict
to find out whether he has any relatives or not or whether the
judgment of Indian court is correct or not. All these take
anything between 5-15 days. During the period the convict
Bangladeshi is supposed to be with the poor constable who is not
given any money to take care of the Bangladeshi for that period.
There is no arrangement for their stay and food during the period.
Finally the frustrated and harassed constable with the help of
sympathetic BSF jawan, at the dead of night simply push back the
Bangladeshi to Bangladesh. That is the difference between Push
Back or Deportation.

There are Bangladeshis but the general perception of terming
everyone from the immigrant Muslims as Bangladeshis are very
dangerous. For your benefit I am attaching Census Language Data in
Excel File please decipher and find out in your own Sub Division
of Tehshil what is happening behind your back.

Solution

Try to make Assam a tribal state. Or create more tribal councils
and ensure that voting rights of Bangladeshis are curtailed.

Attn Samujjal: You collect the census data from my office. I have
made a CD for you.

Mrinal Talukdar
