High Level Assembler (HLASM) was first released on the 26th June 1992. Dr
John Ehrman was responsible for the planning and architecture of HLASM.
HLASM is IBM's standard assembler for the zOS, zVM and zVSE operating
systems. HLASM is built and supported from a common code base, and as you
would expect, is written in High Level Assembler.

John took the initiative for creating High Level Assembler as a follow up
product to the older Assembler F and Assembler H; and he is widely
regarded as the "father of HLASM".

John has led the work to deliver improvements and enhancements for HLASM
and without his dedication and enthusiasm, HLASM would not be the superb
product it is today.

John's 'partners in crime' were the IBM Australia Development Lab in
Perth. They constantly delivered innovation; high quality code; ensured
the product was stable; and ensured the investment made by IBM and our
customers in both the old and new assemblers was maintained. They,
together with John extended the 'long reach' of HLASM from zOS, zVM and
zVSE to zLinux.

Many thanks to John and the developers in Perth (many of them called John
- at one point I'm sure you couldn't work on HLASM unless your name was
John or possibly Craig).

Without all of their hard work and dedication; the product, the language,
its many facilities, HLASM would not be what it is today.

Happy Birthday HLASM.
