Note EDMK sets the condition code so you need only test it with a
condition branch/jump after the edit.

Now the current PrOp says what it has always said, viz., that the
condition-code settings are

0 last field zero or zero length
1 last field less than zero
2 last field greater than zero
4 ...

Since this is perhaps usually but not always what one wants, I
recommended the vacuous subtraction.

To avoid the imputation of sour grapes I will add 1) that this
recommendation is based upon 66 years of experience writing various
assembly languages, 51 (sic) of them those of the IBM System/360 and
its sequelæ, and 2) that longevity credentials of the generic
"collaborated with Babbage" form are really nothing but dubious
arguments from authority.

As I observed here on an earlier occasion, the mules that carry
tourists up and down the sides of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado
have, some of them, been doing their surefooted jobs for many years;
but it would be a mug's game to consult them about the geology of the
Canyon.
