Many years ago, I was initially perplexed by the OS commands and their
abbreviations. A lot of them were abbreviated to their initial letter

S start

R reply

C cancel

D display

L log

M mount

U unload

V vary

W writelog

So far, so good.

But there were others.

F Modify

N Define (MFT partitions)

P Stop

T set

E reset

I switch

K control

Z halt

I tried to develop a set of 'rules' that covered this, based on the sequence
in which the commands were specified. My theory is almost certainly wrong,
but I found it whiled away the time in the machine room waiting for a
channel check on a 2821 killing MFII R17 (over 2 days before it hit...)

The above satisfied the following rules.

1 The first 'unreserved' letter in the command is its
abbreviation.

2 The letter 'o' is not allowed.

3 Start was specified before Stop, Set and Switch.

4 Reply was specified before Reset

5 Reset was specified before Set.

6 Set was specified before Stop

7 Writelog was specified before Switch.

8 Modify was specified after Mount, Switch and Display.

9 Define was specified after Display, Reset, Modify and
Switch

10 Control was specified after Cancel, Define, Set, Reply and
Log

11 Halt just did not conform!

I am sure someone knows a better scheme - and no doubt will tell us all!!
