There is another argument for trhe use of CEEPCALL that is perhaps implicit in what John wrote. Not only are STORAGE OBTAIN and STORAGE RELEASE; they are replaced by FIFO, stack-based machinery for allocating and freeing AUTOMATIC storage (COBOL LOCAL storage), i.e., by the low-overhead operation of moving a pointer forward and backward.
The traditional, high-overhead use of heap-based storage for this purpose is/was only excusable absent an easy-to-use FIFO alternative to it. John Gilmore, Ashland, MA 01721 - USA
