Thanks. Yes, I intended a length override. I stumbled on
&STCKEVAL+0(8), which seems to work.
For whatever reason,
X&SYSNDX EQU &STCKEVAL is worse.
And, trying to convert to hex, I confused myself by forgetting the TR.
