A few years back, after I ported PCRE back to the mainframe (no USS... real old
mainframe), I thought about a more challenging task, like porting the R
language back to the mainframe. I asked some questions around and I was
advised not to take on this task. And the reason was that behind the beautiful
(sic) veneer of C and the R language itself, the rest is... You've guessed,
good old Fortran! Do you remember the 1970's era mathematical/scientific
Fortran library? Well, nobody is courageous enough to even try to rewrite it
in any new language. And I was told that IBM did not bother to upgrade the
mainframe Fortran, so it might not be up to the task anymore.
