Thanks Dave, we are pleased with and encouraged by the response to ESYM.

But I'm afraid it's the same answer. ESYM provides access to JCL symbols 
and z/OS System symbols. It doesn't provide access to USS environment 
symbols. Details are in the PDF document attached to the technote here:

If you see value in extending ESYM support, for example adding access to 
USS environment variables, then please do raise and/or contribute to an 
RFE (see: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21577670). RFEs 
help us prioritise how we use the HLASM team's resources.
