Seymour is talking about maintainable large amounts of code
should have at least alphanumeric labels. Numeric labels can be confusing
unless you have a really good numbering scheme.
It still doesn't matter whether labels are numeric or alphanumeric,
nor whether programs are large or small.
With suitably unrestricted identifier length, alphanumeric labels
have more evocative value than numbers.
With names, you don't know where to look (up or down).
With integers, provided that they are arranged in increasing order,
you know where to look.
I suspect most programmers would not use numeric labels unless forced.
FORTRAN has numeric labels. Large or small programs.
And I would use FORTRAN if forced. Perhaps it's better than
a half-century ago.
Do you collect your FORMAT statements and situate them at the
end of the program, or code them proximate to the WRITEs? (Not
relevant to the numeric vs. alphanumeric choice)
Rarely do I use FORMAT statements in any language.
If I do use them, I put them adjacent to the statement
that requires it.
